This dreaded skin condition is a complex, multifactorial disease that affects 2-3% of the population. Psoriasis is characterized by red, scaly, itchy plaques that are the result of inflammation. The inflammation in turn is a response of the immune system attacking its own cells.
Commonly affected areas are the outer surfaces of the elbows, knees, the back and the scalp.
Psoriasis is not contagious. It is a dysfunction of how fast keratinocytes (cells in the top layer of the skin) grow. This happenes 8-10 times faster than normal, hence the scaling.
Triggers of Psoriasis include stress, injury and genetic factors.
Symptoms are scaling, itching, inflammed skin, pitting of nails and other nail changes. 30% have athritis and joint involvement.
As per conventional medicine, there is no cure. Symptoms are treated with corticosteroids, immunosuppresants and athritis medication.
I would like to give a pictorial description of how Homoeopathy can help.
As mentioned, Psoriasis has a strong immune system involvement. Stress factors- both physical and mental act as triggers and acute flare ups are commonly seen with emotional upsets.
Homeopathy is a wholistic system that treats each patient for his/her unique trigger points, physical and emotional constitutions and has a customized remedy for each individual patient.
To illustrate, here are three patients with Psoriasis. One was triggered by exposure to chemicals, the second to intense emotional trauma and the third began after an injury.
Each case was taken in detail and assesed for their reactions and specific preferences to food, water, temperature, sleep and stress. Family history of auto-immune conditions and the like was investigated. Unique trigger points as well as aggravating and ameliorating factors were identified. After a physical examination of the skin lesions, nails and joints, they were checked for hypertension, obesity, heart disease and diabetes- which all commonly occur with Psoriasis.
Following this detailed process, their symptoms were statistically analyzed and compiled to find the best possible match in the way of a Homoeopathic remedy. The remedy was prescribed and the patient instructed on the dose. Each one received a different remedy although they have the same medical diagnosis.
While that might sound confusing, the explanation is crystal clear. Each patient has a different genetic make-up, stress- response and trigger factors. Homoeopathy respects this individuality and prescribes a tailor-made unique treatment protocol for each.
One patient had dramatic improvement in a years time, for the other two it took less than two months. Again, considering each one’s individuality, its easy to understand that response times differ. This is further influenced by the use of strong medications/cosmetics/stressful events that act to suppress the condition and delay improvement.
Psoriasis is intimately tied with stress triggers and there are often flare-ups when the patient is going through stressful times- this has happened especially often during the lockdown. Here too Homoeopathy steps in and without side-effects, gently clears up the skin.
It is however, not skin deep. The action of the well indicated, higly individualized medicine has the added effect of boosting the immune system and calming the mind. All of which are the absolute need of the hour.
