ARE YOU PANICKING?
There are over 30 confirmed cases of the Coronavirus all over Germany, with over 1000 people in quarantine. This morning Hamburg confirmed its first case. According to virologists, numbers are likely to spike, not just in Germany, but world over.
In response to the flurry of questions I am receiving from friends, patients and family, I decided to put together a little Survive-It-Kit for you.
In the past, I have worked through several epidemics including Dengue and Chikungunya. I can personally attest to the fact that more than the virus, it’s the hype and hysteria that drive people crazy.
Inform yourself: Understandably, in the face of a pandemic (global epidemic) our first reaction is often panic. Stop yourself. Read up from reliable sources. The Corona viruses have been around for over five decades and commonly cause the flu and pneumonias. The ones we know from past occurrences are SARS (Severe acute respiratory virus) and MERS (Middle east respiratory virus). The current mortality rate is less than 2% and those most at risk are persons with broken down immune systems.
People are making a mad dash to pharmacies for face masks and are returning empty-handed because they are all sold out. Surprise fact: the virus is much smaller than the pores in most masks, unless it’s a heavy duty, medical grade one!
So how should you keep yourself healthy?
- Stay calm and informed. Hysteria and panic cause the body to release stress hormones which in turn reduce the body’s immune response, which then makes you more likely to get sick.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap.
- Eat a well-balanced, fresh, organic diet. More water, less sugar.
- Move! Get your muscles in motion, let those lungs take deep breaths.
- Avoid crowded public places and public transport if possible.
- Work from home instead of the office if that is an option.
- If you are sick with possible flu symptoms, call ahead and ask your doctor where they’d like to consult you. Showing up in a waiting room full of sick people may spread the virus further.
- Use Homoeopathy.

In answer to all those asking if they can take a preventive remedy already, here’s is what you need to understand in homoeopathic treatment of epidemics.
For the most effective homoeopathic prophylactic to be found in an epidemic, there are certain criteria that need to be fulfilled.
Homoeopaths in a given area must have effectively treated a large number of patients with a single remedy. The important point here is that the expression of the virus differs from place to place. Therefore, the symptom picture is different whether it is in Hamburg, Goa or Wuhan. This is possibly due to variations in topography, climate, housing situations, hygiene etc. Hence each area will require a different remedy.
Therefore, until such time, I cannot offer with surety, one single remedy that will work for those who want to protect against the virus.
However, what I can offer you, homoeopathically, is this:
- If you are already being treated by a Homeopath, contact them to prescribe an individualized medicine for you, what some may call a constitutional remedy. Most likely, you are already immune to the virus as you are taking measures to boost your immunity.
- Though I strongly recommend having a qualified Homoeopath prescribe, I know that is not always feasible. Here is a list of the most likely remedies used to treat flu-like symptoms, where you can also see how each remedy presents a different disease picture.
CAUTION: the list below is by no means intended as a replacement for a medical evaluation by your doctor. Please have yourself examined by a medical doctor if you exhibit any of the likely symptoms- fever, cough, and shortness of breath; similar to influenza.
Treats influenza in the initial 24 hours. Especially useful if symptoms come on after exposure to cold, dry winds. The person is usually panicky, fearful, convinced they are going to die. Symptoms come on suddenly and violently, like high fevers, flushed cheeks, rapid pulse and intense thirst.
Extremely chilly and restless. Has great anxiety and is exhausted. May have diarrhea and/or vomiting. Discharges are foul-smelling. Thirsty for small sips and craves warm drinks. Worse between midnight and 2am.
Symptoms come on rapidly with tremendous heat, redness and throbbing pains. No thirst. Sensitive to noise, light, jarring motion, heat. Head hot with cold limbs. Craves lemons or lemonade.
Aching pains worse on slightest motion. Needs to stay very still. Intense thirst for large quantities of water. Dryness of mouth and throat. Dry, hard, painful cough, needs to hold chest while coughing. Bursting, stitching pains. Mostly right-sided complaints.
Violent, aching, bone breaking pains. Worse 7-9 am. Thirst for cold water. Craves ice cream. Symptoms better by vomiting of bile. Chilly, restless, nauseated.
Dull, heavy head with extreme weakness. No thirst despite fever. Droopy eyelids. Chills run up and down the spine. Fever preceeded with visual disturbances.
Throat feels sore, raw, burning and painful. Ulcers in throat and mouth. Difficulty in swallowing. Alternate chill and heat. Offensive secretions. Great thirst for cold drinks.
Angry, impatient, cannot stand the pain. Oversensitive to noise, light, odour and touch. Nausea better by vomiting. Intense chills, must cover himself at all times. Throat feels raw and scraped.
Stiff, sore joints and muscles, worse on first movement but better by continued movement. Restless and unable to find a comfortable posture, desire to stretch. Cold sores on lips and mouth. Thirsty, chilly.
Taking the remedy CAUTION: This is only a general idea of dosage and dosage may differ in each patient, please check with a qualified Homoeopath for a more accurate and individualized prescription.
Start with a dose each hour for three doses, then give 3 doses per day until symptoms are 50% better. Then reduce the repetition to half. Once 70-80% improved, stop the remedy. A dose consists of 2-3 pellets of 30c potency.
Don’t touch the pellets with your fingers. Just tap them into the cap of the vial and pop them in the mouth to melt, no water is required. If no relief after three doses, then re-evaluate symptoms and remedy choice. If you have a peaceful sleep and better energy after dosing, this is a good sign that it’s a good match. You may see a dramatic improvement, or a gradual one. The goal is to support the system so it doesn’t get “stuck” in any phase of the illness, but moves through the stages smoothly. Often, the stages are actually shortened with the aid of homeopathic remedies.
