What can I eat while breastfeeding?

Every breastfeeding mother we meet always asks this question.

The answer is quite simple: nutritious, wholesome unprocessed food. And don’t forget, plenty of water to hydrate!

  • These can reduce supply: smoking, caffeine (about 250ml/day is ok), Sage, Parsley, Peppermint, Oral contraceptive pills, and Nasal decongestants.

  • These can increase production: Fenugreek, Fennel, Blessed Thistle, Shatavari

Golden rule: supply and demand. Your breasts need to be regularly and efficiently emptied so your body gets the signal to produce more. Emptying is ideally by latching the baby on, but can also be achieved by hand expression or pumping.

Note: there is a very small percentage of babies that react badly to milk, nuts, or wheat in mum’s diet. In this case, mum’s intake may need to be assessed and adjusted.
