Induced Lactation

There are several reasons why a parent or partner might want to start producing milk even though they never breastfed before. No, you don’t have to be the mother or pregnant or even identify as female to breast/chest feed.

Induced Lactation is the purposeful stimulation of lactation when it was previously absent.

Reasons parents induce lactation:

  • Adoption

  • Non-birth parent wants to feed

  • Feeding a child born out of surrogacy

  • Natural disaster or infant emergency

 Three steps to inducing lactation:

  1. Preparing the breast or chest

  2. Starting to make milk

  3. Starting to feed and growing the supply.
