Does my child need cow’s milk?

Donkey milk is for donkey babies, camel milk for camel babies, and monkey milk for monkey babies….
So why cow’s milk for human babies?
Most of us have grown up hearing, "Drink this glass of milk; you need strong bones!"

As we attempt to raise strong kids, we find ourselves passing on the knowledge we were reared with.
Before you take for granted that kids need cow’s milk, hear me out as I ask :

To Milk or Not to Milk?

Here is what can go sideways if your child receives too much cow’s milk:

  1. Cow’s milk is very high in protein which may stress the baby’s kidneys.

  2. The massive amount of calories (required by a calf, not a baby) may lead to obesity.

  3. Cow milk consumption can cause iron deficiency.

  4. Some babies develop an allergy to cow milk protein.

 So, what to do?

Until six months- exclusive breastfeeding or formula

Thereafter introduce solids for the baby to explore and have fun with.

Until one year of age- milk (breast or formula) is the primary source of nutrition. Food until one is just for fun.

If you want to give cow’s milk, don’t exceed 400ml daily.
