Celebrating being women!
My father bought my mother and I carnations every 8th of March. Now that he is gone, I ache for that gesture. In the past I have expected it from my partner and then felt let down when there wasn’t a carnation waiting for me.
I’ve since decided to buy myself flowers every 8th of March. To celebrate a tradition that made me feel loved.
Here’s an interesting fact; Carnations are thought to have been derived from the Latin “incarnation” God in the form of flesh. I quite like the implied meaning and will forever have to wonder if this was the reason behind my father’s choice of flower.
Let’s celebrate being women
And the many transitions it entails
From girl to woman to wise lady
From child to provider and so much in between
There’s innate beauty to being feminine
Whether by assigned gender or by choice
Let’s embrace it all
The softness and the toughness
The monthly cycles and hot flushes
The unshakeable faith in turbulent times
And the resilience born out of struggle
A woman is constantly told she’s not enough
By society, by the capitalistic economy
But as time and experience show
Whatever stands the test of fire
Only emerges stronger
Here’s raising a flower to you, fellow woman, cheers!
